In order to study C.G. Jungs Analytic Psychology in depth and to draft written works and scientific treatises, students and lecturers are reliant on a widely equipped library that does justice to the diversity of Jungs thinking.

Psychology in depth and to draft written works and scientific treatises, the students and lecturers of ZURICH are reliant on a library that does justice to the diversity of Jungs thinking. The library stock required includes not only publications in German and English from the extensive and ever expanding field of Analytic Psychology itself but also from many associated disciplines: General Psychology, History of Depth Psychology, other analytical schools, Psychiatry, Theory of Musical Symbolism, Mythology, Religion, Ethnology, Art, History, Philosophy.

Current status

Two years ago ZURICH started stocking up a library. Thanks to various sponsor monies specifically donated for the library and books given by analysts working at ZURICH, so far we have acquired more than 2,600 books, as well as bookcases and a specific computer program, and taken on an experienced librarian with responsibility for the initial stocking stage.

Future assignments

To make the library usable and bring it up to the standard required for teaching and study, we are dependent on developing a subject catalogue and acquiring more books, and on outlay for material and consultancy. These aims call for funds that ISAP cannot raise with current revenue.

Developing a subject catalogue

ISAP can resort to a Jungian Thesaurus (i.e. alphabetical collection of words/technical terms of a specific field) that can be taken over. Given the interdisciplinary approach of Jungian Psychology there are several special fields/subjects. As a special library used only by the students and lecturers, the library has to be specifically tailored to the library users. This entails the laborious task of going through each book to be catalogued for the key terms and entering them in the catalogue with about 3-6 keywords of relevance to Analytic Psychology. The subject catalogue also has to be bilingual.

Acquiring books

As the acquisition of more books has to be systematic and of maximum benefit to students and lecturers, not more than roughly 200 300 new copies can be acquired and processed each year. In addition there are book collections of private individuals, in particular late colleagues, which have to be incorporated in the library.

Material and consultancy expenses

The acquisition of new books requires a massive expansion of the existing library infrastructure and will incur extra material costs. The library expansion phase will necessitate more frequent services rendered by the specialized software firm.
